Many British citizens every year decide to make the big move to Australia. It’s easy to understand why the country attracts so many immigrants from the UK. It’s warm, comfortable, and there’s no language barrier. However, before taking the plunge and moving to a whole new continent, there are several things you should consider. To help moving to Australia easier, the team at Emergico have a few tips.

Moving to Australia can be a lengthy process but here are some tips to get you started

The Visa Process

Before you can immigrate, you will need to obtain a visa. Those moving to Australia from the UK on a more permanent basis generally will apply for one of two types of visas: a skilled worker visa or a retirement visa. There are different requirements for each type of visa, to help moving to Australia as smooth as possible it is very important to understand them so that you can choose the one that best fits your circumstances.

Retirement Visas

You may apply for a retirement visa if you are over 55 years old and have no dependents (you may bring a partner with you, however). To qualify for this visa, you must be completely self-supported financially, and you also must have significant financial assets that will make an investment in the country of Australia. You must have at least $500,000 in assets, as well as an income of at least $65,000. This money can come from a pension. Luckily for UK citizens, you can collect your pension in Australia, although its amount will stay fixed from the time that you move.

Skilled Work Visas

There are also several skilled worker visas that you can apply for. If your occupation is currently on the list of high-demand jobs, you can apply for an independent visa by expressing an interest through SkillSelect. This is a government calculator that awards points related to various factors of your application to determine your eligibility. If you do not qualify for an independent visa, you may also be sponsored by the government or by a family member living in Australia. If you already have a job with an international organisation waiting for you in Australia, you can apply for an employer nomination scheme. Depending on where you want to settle in Australia, you may also be able to have a future employer sponsor you.

Be Prepared!

Be prepared for acclimating to Australia to take some time. Although the culture shock for UK expats isn’t as dramatic as it might be for those from other countries, it can still be overwhelming. Plan ahead financially to reduce stress, and look for opportunities to network with other expats if you can. All of our clients are given access to an online relocation portal which will help to streamline the process.
