Do You Want to Become an Australian Citizen?: New Requirements You Need to Know About

There are many reasons to become an Australian citizen. It’s a beautiful country to live in with lots of opportunities. Citizens have access to full consular support in case of accidents or mishaps while staying offshore. You can also enjoy the luxury of visa-free travel to 169 countries as well as other great benefits. The hard part is getting through the process of becoming a legal citizen.

New Requirements for Australian Citizenship

In an on-going effort to improve the Australian citizenship test, the government is making changes that could affect you. An independent study conducted in 2008 resulted in 34 recommended improvements. The government supported 23 of the proposed changes and provided support for four more. What does that mean for anyone who plans to apply for Australian citizenship?

  • English Language Test

If you want to become an Australian citizen, you must be able to speak and understand English. A stand-alone language test is administered that will cover listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This must be passed to be considered for approval.

  • Permanent Resident Requirement

All applicants must have lived in the country for a minimum of four years as a permanent resident. That’s a significant increase from the previous requirement of only one year.

  • Stronger Test Questions

Stronger test questions will be included that are intended to be more meaningful and to better assess the applicant’s understanding of Australia’s values and the responsibilities of a citizen.

  • Prove Your Journey

Applicants must prove the journey they took to get to this point. That means showing the steps taken to contribute and integrate into the community. This is done through membership to local organisations, proof of employment, and school enrolment for children.

  • Up to 3 Failures Allowed

Applicants can fail the citizenship test up to three times before being disqualified. There is currently no failure limit.

  • Zero Tolerance Cheating Policy

A zero tolerance cheating policy will also be introduced. Anyone caught cheating will automatically fail the test.
